From Interiors to Instruments: Kelly Wearstler Launches TIMBRA with Edelweiss

March 22, 2026 - Piano Industry Magazine

For years, bespoke pianos have quietly appeared in Kelly Wearstler’s interiors, not as background elements, but as defining features that anchor a space both visually and acoustically. Over time, a natural question emerged: what if the instrument itself became the design statement?

The answer is Timbra, Wearstler’s first piano - a sculptural reinterpretation of the traditional grand. Built on a compact, rounded form, the instrument offered a new kind of canvas, allowing the piano to be approached not just as a musical device, but as an object of design.

Crafted from layered birchwood veneer, Timbra’s surface flows in soft, wave-like contours inspired by the movement of sound itself. The result is a piano that feels dynamic even at rest, blurring the boundary between form and function. It reflects Wearstler’s long-standing philosophy: that interiors - and the objects within them - should engage the senses beyond the visual.

Despite its sculptural presence, the instrument remains rooted in traditional piano-making principles. Its design was carefully developed around the internal structure, ensuring that performance and acoustics remain uncompromised.

Designed for intimate settings - from private homes to yachts and refined hospitality spaces—Timbra exists at the intersection of disciplines: part instrument, part sculpture, and entirely a statement of contemporary design.

A piano used by John Lennon to compose songs for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has sold for a record £2.5 million ($3.2 million). The instrument, auctioned at Christie’s in New York, is believed to have achieved the highest price ever paid for Beatles memorabilia.
