Canada’s largest music superstore closes after 57 years

May 22, 2025 - Piano Industry Magazine

In a heartfelt announcement that struck a deep chord with musicians across the country, Cosmo Music, Canada’s largest and most iconic music store, has officially begun its final movement.

After 57 years of inspiring musicians, outfitting performers, and building a vibrant musical community, Cosmo Music is closing its doors. The decision comes in the wake of persistent post-pandemic challenges, despite the company’s substantial investments in technology and bold attempts to adapt to a shifting marketplace.

What began in 1966 as Cosmo Guitars, a small import business founded by Tom Hebert, quickly grew into a full-fledged retail shop just two years later.

As the company prepares for its final sale and begins processing refunds and transitions, it does so with immense gratitude.

“We are deeply grateful to our dedicated team, loyal customers, brand partners, and the music community that has supported us throughout these incredible years,” the Heberts said in their announcement. “It’s been a privilege to serve as a hub for musicians and music lovers alike.”

Although the closing date is yet to be determined, the Richmond Hill store will remain open for a limited time as remaining inventory is sold off. A final sale will offer customers one last chance to take home a piece of music history.

Cosmo Music's legacy lives on - not just in the instruments it sold, but in the music it sparked, the careers it launched, and the memories etched into the hearts of generations. From a modest guitar shop to Canada’s most iconic music superstore, its story is one of passion, purpose, and perseverance.
