Keys to survival: Petrof’s smart U.S. move
July 15, 2025 - Piano Industry Magazine
In a bold and strategic move, Czech piano manufacturer Petrof has announced the launch of a new subsidiary, Petrof USA, designed to safeguard its foothold in the American market amidst escalating trade tensions.
This decision follows the announcement by then-U.S. President Donald Trump of potential 30 percent tariffs on European imports — a policy that could have hit European piano makers hard. For Petrof, whose finely crafted instruments have earned global acclaim, the United States represents a significant market, contributing approximately 11 percent to the company’s annual sales.
“We knew we had to act decisively,” said Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová, president of the fifth-generation family-owned firm. “By establishing Petrof USA, we’re not only avoiding unnecessary costs but also strengthening our presence in one of the world’s most important music markets.”
Founded in 1864, Petrof has built a reputation for producing pianos that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Today, more than 70 percent of its production is exported to over 60 countries across the globe - a testament to the enduring appeal of its instruments.
With the formation of Petrof USA, the company aims to cut out intermediaries, streamline distribution, and retain more profit margins, a savvy response to uncertain international trade dynamics.
